Yira Sor Excited by Fresh Start at Amedspor

Yira Sor Excited by Fresh Start at Amedspor

Yira Sor has ended his four-year spell at Belgian club Genk by joining Turkish Super Lig newcomers Amedspor.

The transfer brings an end to months of uncertainty surrounding the Nigerian winger’s future. Sor initially played an important role for Genk after arriving in Belgium, but his influence gradually decreased as competition for places increased.

Injuries and inconsistent performances also affected his progress. During his final seasons at the club, he struggled to secure a regular place in the starting lineup.

Sor made 119 appearances for Genk in all competitions and scored 17 goals. He will now attempt to rebuild his form in Turkey and establish himself as an important player for Amedspor.

Amedspor Offer a New Opportunity

Amedspor have reportedly paid around €3 million for the 26-year-old forward. Sor has signed a three-year contract with the Turkish club, which is preparing for its first campaign in the Turkish top flight.

The move gives the Nigerian a chance to start again in a different football environment. Instead of competing for limited opportunities at Genk, Sor will hope to play a more prominent role in Amedspor’s attacking plans.

The winger said he was excited by the challenge of joining a competitive league and helping his new team achieve its objectives.

“After spending time in Belgium, I am excited about this new challenge in a competitive league like the Turkish Süper Lig,” Sor said in an interview with Footy-Africa.

He also expressed his satisfaction that Genk and Amedspor had reached an agreement, describing the transfer as an opportunity he was ready to embrace.

Failed Bundesliga Move Now Behind Him

Sor’s future attracted considerable attention during the winter transfer window. Several German clubs were reportedly interested in signing him, and a move to the Bundesliga appeared possible for some time.

However, the negotiations eventually collapsed and the transfer did not go ahead. Sor remained at Genk for the rest of the season, although he continued to find it difficult to secure consistent playing time.

The move to Amedspor now gives him a fresh opportunity to put that disappointment behind him. Regular appearances in Turkey could help the winger regain confidence and improve his chances of earning a more important role with Nigeria.

Reunion with Gift Orban

Sor will not be the only Nigerian player at Amedspor. He is expected to join forces with fellow Super Eagles forward Gift Orban, who moved to the Turkish club from Hoffenheim earlier in the summer.

The presence of Orban should make the transition easier for Sor. Playing alongside a compatriot could help him settle into a new country and adapt to the demands of Turkish football.

Amedspor have become one of the latest Turkish clubs to attract Nigerian players. Victor Osimhen, Paul Onuachu, Kelechi Iheanacho, Anthony Dennis, Chibuike Nwaiwu and several other Nigeria internationals are also expected to feature in Turkey during the new season. At least 12 Nigerian players are listed in the 2026/27 Süper Lig player pool.

More Nigerian Players in Turkey

Turkey has increasingly become a popular destination for Nigerian footballers. The country offers established players the opportunity to compete at a high level while also providing younger talents with regular first-team football.

For Sor, the growing Nigerian presence in the league is another positive aspect of the transfer. He will have the chance to face several of his international teammates during the season.

The winger is particularly interested in competing against fellow Super Eagles players rather than only meeting them during national-team camps.

Possible Debut Against Erzurumspor

Sor could make his Amedspor debut alongside Orban in the club’s opening match of the 2026/27 Süper Lig campaign.

Amedspor are scheduled to face Erzurumspor on Saturday, and Sor will hope to be involved from the beginning. His first appearance could provide an early indication of the role he is expected to play under head coach Besnik Hasi.

The Nigerian will be determined to make a strong impression after completing his move from Genk. A good start could help him quickly become a key part of Amedspor’s plans.

Sor Wants to Enjoy the Challenge

Sor’s move to Amedspor represents more than a change of club. It is an opportunity to revive his career, play with greater freedom and prove that he can still perform consistently at the highest level.

The Nigerian winger already has experience in European football, but he now faces the challenge of adapting to a new league and new tactical demands.

If he can remain fit and produce regular performances, Sor could become one of Amedspor’s most influential attacking players. For now, he is looking forward to the challenge and believes his new adventure in Turkey could be both productive and enjoyable.
